Having grown up in a family who were all overbearing and constantly criticizing, she learned to be quiet and fly under the radar. She does have a sense of humor, but it doesn’t come out easily. She doesn’t carry conversations much, unless she is discussing her plants. In general, she is much like the plants she tends: seen, not heard, and perfectly content to be left alone in the field. | |

| Personal History | Kezra was born and raised on Trill, from a family with a long, proud history of contributions to music. Her father is a composer, her mother a singer. Her oldest brother plays several string instruments and her other older brother is a symphony conductor. Her aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents are similarly talented. Several of them are joined, including both her parents. Kezra, however, was born with a tin ear. She cannot carry a tune, play an instrument or keep time. Her family constantly pressured her to study, practice and try to fit in with the family, but it seemed no use. Despite having what her family felt were serious intellectual deficiencies, Kezra was enrolled in the Trill Music Academy. She did spectacularly awful there, failing to understand even basic musical theory, and showing not even basic proficiency in any instrumental family. Her one escape during her time there was in the academy gardens. She began learning about plants from the groundskeepers and found she had a mind for it. She began assisting them and learning about different plants, how to care for them and their uses. She spent all her time outside of class and homework reading about plants, and when she finished learning about the plants on Trill, she moved on to species from other planets. While this sudden devotion to activities that would in no way help her with her academy work no doubt contributed to her poor performance, it did give her a passion that kept her sane, kept her focused and gave her a direction forward. Her family’s name and contributions kept her there far longer than either she or her instructors wanted, but everyone eventually admitted defeat and she was dismissed from the Academy. However, again using their influence, her family had her records sealed, preventing anyone from learning about her failures. They used the fact that she did attend the academy and her saving grace of understanding some science and math, bolstered again by their reputations, to get her admitted into the Symbiosis Commission’s candidacy program. While she did do her best to qualify, she was told early on that she would not qualify as a candidate. Her family was disappointed and didn’t hesitate to inform her of that. Reaching a breaking point, she finally stopped allowing her family to force her to be like them and began secretly applying to universities off of Trill. She applied for a scholarship to a university on Betazed and was accepted. She had a friend use a dermal mask to hide her spots, packed what she could carry and left in the middle of the night leaving a note to her family detailing all the hurt they’d caused her over the years and that she was cutting them off and not to contact her. She resented them, and Trills in general, deciding to go where she could avoid them almost entirely. |
