980 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Laying the Groundwork
Location: USS Koinonia, various

Location: USS Koinonia, Transporter Room

Ella had felt like her time at Starfleet Academy, adjusted by there was so much to do. She felt like she went for one problem to the next to the next and now her Academy days were over. She really did enjoy her time there but now she was ready and excited for her new adventure.

She wasn't sure what to think of her new ship that she would be serving on the thing was practically a flying City. And for many years one of the type of ships served as Starfleet headquarters.

The pax class was definitely different from what she had anticipated serving on. She assumes Starfleet would put her on a dingy small vessel or maybe some remote Outpost colony as a young incident she didn't expect to be put on a state-of-the-art Starship.

With two duffel bags in her hands one of them full of actually her gear and the other full of stuff animals and pillows and every other comfort creature she could cram in there. She wasn't sure how much space you would really have but she was really looking forward to her new assignment. As an ensign she knew that she probably have to share a room.

Ella found herself in the transporter room, she beamed aboard and was ready to be processed and to serve as an operations officer. “Hello I am Ella O’Sullivan permission to come aboard?”

A transporter specialist granted her permission at the moment nobody was available to meet her she didn't take it personally; she knew she was a low ranking officer. "Permission granted the Command staff wanted me to give you this data pad; they'll have all your codes and to check into your new quarters.” the transporter specialist said.

“Thank you crewman.” Ella simply said that she grabbed the data PAD as she walked off the transporter pad itself. She started to make her way out of the transporter room. Next stop her quarters and then hopefully up to the bridge.

Location: USS Koinonia, Sickbay

Ella dropped her gear off, and quickly made her way over to sickbay. She wanted to get the pesty physical out of the way. Why did she need another one? Seemed like she had too many of them when she was at the academy. Nothing has changed since she left the academy. She walked in, in uniform waiting for a medical personal to notice her.

S'Von had just handed off another padd to an orderly and had been contemplating lunch, when he saw another new face walk in. Thus far, they'd been keeping up with the flow of traffic, but first-day crowds could start at a moment's notice, and he wanted to keep on top of things. He walked over and gave a nod. "Greetings. I am Doctor Hill. Are you here for your on-boarding exam?"

"I am; do you prefer Doctor or Commander? Ella started to say, wanting to respect the appropriate way to address a superior officer. She was a little nervous and she wanted to make a first good impression.

"In Sickbay, you may refer to me as Doctor. In non-medical capacities while on duty you may use either Doctor or Commander, whichever you feel appropriate in the moment," he said. "Please, follow me."

Ella followed the man. "Thanks for being available Doctor. I really appreciate it." She started to think about the journey to get here on the Koinonia. She felt proud of herself. She was a recent graduate of the war college.

"Thanks are not necessary, it is my job," he said. He led her to a free biobed and activated his tricom's tricorder. "Please lie down. This will not take long."

"On my back or stomach?" Ella asked as she sat on the bio bed, waiting for further instructions.

S'Von raised an eyebrow, contemplating which answer would be more satisfying. "Your back will be fine," he said, finally. As she laid back, he began scanning, syncing it with the biobed's scans, watching the readouts. "Fortunately, your file is sufficiently up to date. I merely need to confirm its contents." He let the biobed work its scans, and made visual inspection of her eyes and throat. "Are you enjoying your time on board thus far?" he said, making 'small talk'.

"Confusing, this place is so big. Took me ten minutes to find my quarters." Ella said, as she got comfortable on her back. She took a deep breath, as she waited for the good doctor to continue with the physical.

"The ship's directory should have everything listed," he said. "If your tricomm badge isn't updating it correctly, you should speak with Operations." He finished his scans and picked up a tricorder, programming it with a standard set of preventatives. He pressed it to her neck and checked the readings once more. "The good news is, you're in good health, and you should have plenty of energy with which to explore the ship." He made some notes on his terminal. "Are there any questions you have for me regarding any medical needs?"

"No doctor, just glad I'm in good health I'm just eager to get started." Ella said with a big smile on her face, thinking to yourself after this you should probably go check in with the captain or at least the XO.

"Very well, then, Ensign. You are cleared for duty," S'Von said, giving her a nod. "Enjoy the rest of your day."

"Thank you doctor, and thank you for making this painless. I don't know why we need so many physicals as we enter Starfleet but what do I know I'm just a simple operations officer. Ella said with the warm smile on her face as she left sickbay. The scene fades away, as she walks out into the corridors and proceeds with the rest of her day.
